  • Pot size: 9cm

  • Growing condition: Partial - full shade
  • Flowering season: April to June

A very useful groundcover for tough, dry shady conditions.

A mythical thug for a shady spot where it can spread and display its fragrant white flowers in Spring. Will tolerate dry soils. It was used most effectively as ground cover in a small, shady courtyard show garden at Chelsea 2012, and can be seen in the walled garden at NT Mottisfont forming a wonderful ground cover under a fig tree.

Galium will spread quite vigorously, but it is a plant that will survive the toughest of dry shady conditions.

Sweet Cicely, fully deciduous. In Spring it produces beautiful soft, hairy, pale green leaves, and then later small heads of cow parsley type flowers. A medium growing form with white flowers with pink calyx. Very tolerant of dry soils and conditions. One of the most and best evergreen of the forms. Offers Autumn brightness as the leaves colour. Makes a fantastic dense ground cover even in dry shade. We have it growing at the base of a hornbeam hedge in a very thin soil and it is very happy.

A blue-chip and striking Spring woodlander, comparatively large blue flowers in masses in Spring and possibly the odd one in Autumn too. Slowing spreading to form a mat of foliage. Evergreen and quite charming. Likes woodsy conditions and combines beautifully with spring bulbs and ferns. I have seen it used as a very stylish underplant in a formal courtyard garden too.
