Meconopsis

Meconopsis are a lovely group of plants. Many species are known, some perennial, some monocarpic (dies after flowering). The fantastic blue coloured flowers of Meconopsis grandis and betonicifolia and best of all are the hybrids between the two; x sheldonii. A plant in Cumbria underwent a doubling of chromosome numbers and became fertile. These viable seed-raised plants are exceptional. All meconopsis like cool, semi shade in the south, with acid pH soils. They can be grown well, as can be seen from the huge beds that were grown at the Savill Gardens along with many others.

Meconopsis cambrica

  • Pot size: 9cm
  • Plant ultimate height: 30cm (12in)
  • Growing condition: Partial - full shade
  • Flowering season: May to July

Welsh poppies, should possibly be a true poppy or indeed the only true meconopsis. They will seed around and naturalise in shaded beds and always look refreshingly lovely. Maybe not for the tidiest of gardeners but suited to a more, how shall I say, informal and naturalistic approach! Mainly orange but you may get a yellow or red (Frances Perry).
