Convallaria (Lily of the Valley)

An understated and elegant plant with the most exquisite scent. It has a number of common names which charmingly capture its attributes - dangle bells, fairy bells, ladder to heaven. Convallaria are tough, hardy and will grow in partial to full shade although they will benefit from a little TLC until established. When happy they can present the gardener with the delightful problem of spreading; if this is a real concern then the variegated forms will be a little less vigorous. The flowers and leaves will die back completely in the Summer and they combine beautifully with low growing evergreen ferns, Ajuga and Pulmonaria. They are a must for the shaded garden. It is such a treat in the Spring to be able to pick your own Convallaria and let delicious fragrance waft through your home.
Poisonous if eaten.
