Astrantia

Astrantia thrive in woodland gardens and in shaded and partial shaded beds and borders. They are fully hardy and like a moist fertile soil. Once established they will gradually spread. They require no staking and will flower for a long spell especially if not in too warm a spot. They may well flower later in the season if cut back after the first flush and they combine beautifully with Actaea, Geraniums and Heuchera. The lovely flowers are great dried too!

A medium growing form with white flowers with pink calyx. Very tolerant of dry soils and conditions. One of the most and best evergreen of the forms. Offers Autumn brightness as the leaves colour. Makes a fantastic dense ground cover even in dry shade. We have it growing at the base of a hornbeam hedge in a very thin soil and it is very happy.

Bluish pearly pink flowers. A nice form of this woodland toughy from the Old Rectory, Burghfield. Will seed around to a certain extent and thrive in pretty much the driest position. An incredibly useful Geranium, a great candidate for underplanting in shaded and wooded spots. Wonderful for natural or semi wild planting schemes.

syn Stipa arundinaceae. The pheasant tailed grass - a lovely grass that will pretty much grow anywhere. Good in shade even dry shade, with orange flashed leaves all growing season turning to full glowing embers in the Autumn. Described in a recent RHS trial as 'an excellent' plant and deserving of its AGM.

Very easy to look after, just comb out any old and abttered leaves in Spring.

A blue-chip and striking Spring woodlander, comparatively large blue flowers in masses in Spring and possibly the odd one in Autumn too. Slowing spreading to form a mat of foliage. Evergreen and quite charming. Likes woodsy conditions and combines beautifully with spring bulbs and ferns. I have seen it used as a very stylish underplant in a formal courtyard garden too.
