Aquilegia

Aquilegia are easy, very floriferous perennials for the woodland garden. They are happiest in partial shade, but can tolerate full sun or almost full shade. Once established, Aquilegia are drought tolerant and will thrive in dry summer soils. They are not pH sensitive and do well on light fertiliser applications. They are not good dividers and will need to be propagated from seed. Most Aquilegia naturally mildly seed around rarely becoming a problem. Particular forms need to be isolated to avoid hybridisation with other types.
Aquilegia are lovely with other woodland plants for the shade garden such as ferns, Tiarella, hardy Geraniums, Alchemilla, Pulmonaria and Phlox divaricata.

Pest and diseases for Aquilegia are, on the whole, not a problem. A bit of late season mildew and maybe some caterpillar damage early in the year is about the extent of it.
